Autumn Leaves

Grampa & Grandma Mikula came from Hungary. They settled in the Pullman area of Chicago, where they lived in a 3 story home. My Dad was born 7/27/21. The family was very close. Grampa Mikula died when I was very young, and his funeral was the first I attended. My memory of him was when he was in the hospital before his death as he waved at me from the window. |
Aunt Helen, Dad and Grandma.
My fondest memories were the holidays, when Aunt Helen and Grandma cooked the wonderful food I remember. Grandma cutting noodles on a long table, and Aunt Helen rolling cabbage. |

Dad & Lou during the War years |
|
My Dad served in the army in Korea. He always told me he "built bridges".
I learned more about that later, but I always thought that made him so special. |

Uncle Lou...his perfect game!
Uncle Lou and Aunt Ann now live in Arkansas. |

My Mom and Dad on a Date.
My mother was about 17 here |

My parents married in 8/31/1946 and divorced when I was 14. My Dad left for California after I was 16. I only saw him twice before he left, for our birthdays. |
|
My Dad had been a printer all his life. He worked for a small printing company in Dolton, and had his own press at home in the garage. his home business he called RAND printing. He contracted "printers disease" from the offset printing process. |
Christmas was always an important time with my Dad. He would always work on the tree to make it perfect, sawing limbs and fitting them into bear spots. He built a "manger" for me one year that I still display at Christmas |
|
I use to think that California must be Heaven, all the men that left me ended up there, and never came back. |
I talked to my Dad after my Uncle's Death. We made plans to visit at some time in the future. I received one birthday card from him, and hoped to see him in March but He became too ill. He died in September 1, 1991 |

A special memory of one of my Dad's happier times, when he found this old truck and restored it. |
This was when I was about 11 years old.
